The Town of Salem, one of New Hampshire's largest communities, required a completely overhauled web presence to replace its old site, which featured an antiquated design, a confusing navigation structure and a backend that was difficult to maintain.

The site – located at www.townofsalem.org – makes it easy for visitors to view the town's latest announcements, download important documents and learn about upcoming meetings and events. Each department has its own section that includes a description of its duties, contact information and useful links. Residents can also sign up for email updates about town happenings.

Aside from being a community resource, the site doubles as a powerful marketing tool for the town. A municipality's website is a key aspect to attracting quality companies to locate there, which ultimately decreases the tax burden for residents. The site touts Salem, which borders Massachusetts and is a short drive from Boston, as a place that's full of commercial, industrial and recreational opportunities.

The CMS is open-source, so it's free of the exorbitant licensing and maintenance fees that proprietary solutions carry.
